The high brace is used when the angle of capsize is substantial, or when side-surfing a high wave. The power face is placed out to the side of the capsize, the shaft held as horizontally to the surface as possible with the elbows low and tucked into the body to protect the shoulders from injury. The lower body rights the kayak under the paddler. Head position - generally cocked over the raised knee - is important for balance in the high brace. As the boat is righted, the blade is sliced out of the water and returned to paddling position.
